Our mission can be simply stated: to publish the best serious nonfiction being written today. "Serious" is one of those terms, like "literary," that we often use in the publishing industry but can't easily define. What we mean by serious nonfiction is work that represents original research, sharp thinking, and lively writing.
We seek to publish books that ask fresh questions about vital subjects, or find fresh answers to time-honored questions; books that offer insight into crucial issues of our day; books that make groundbreaking scholarship accessible to a general audience; books that tell unforgettable stories; books that change the conversation.
Equally important, we seek works that revel in the joy of writing as a creative art—books that are a pleasure to read. Serious nonfiction emphatically does not mean dry or wonky. Like our sister imprints at Bloomsbury, we strive to treat our authors as valued partners, to produce beautiful books, and to present them to readers with flair and creativity. The subjects we publish in range from history, politics, and economics to science, art, and philosophy. Our list includes some of the most distinguished journalists, academics, and independent scholars writing today. It also includes writers who will become known as the leading authors of the years to come.
